Jennifer works primarily with high achieving business owners, professionals and families who, among other things, aspire to a work-optional lifestyle. She is known for her lively demeanour, no-nonsense attitude, and positive approach to all areas of life.
Jennifer and her husband Andrew are the parents of two young daughters. Together with their Whoodle puppy, they live on a rural acreage where they can be found enjoying the pleasure of uncomplicated family time. Jennifer is a former competitive muay thai kickboxer, as well as an avid skier, eternal sun seeker, self-described wine nerd and fitness enthusiast.
In addition to her two University Degrees, Jennifer holds the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM®) designation.
An advisor by nature, Jennifer has built her professional life around offering sound advice to clients in order to achieve specific objectives. Prior to joining Odlum Brown, Jennifer spent eight years as a practicing lawyer, counselling clients on a variety of complex and highly sensitive legal matters. The majority of her practice was conducted in the courtroom, where she developed sharp analytical and communication skills, a keen listening ear and the ability to adapt confidently in a highly volatile environment. Those skills continue to serve her well as she navigates clients’ complex individual needs through all types of market conditions.
Jennifer’s investment philosophy rests on three pillars:
1. Independence – Throughout her professional life, Jennifer has always been committed to objectivity. She values the ability to give advice without the influence of corporate pressures, sales targets or other conflicts of interest. As an independent firm that does not participate in investment banking activities or sell any proprietary investment products, Odlum Brown’s client-focused business model allowed her to consistently put her clients’ interests first.
2. Communication – Making good investment recommendations starts with knowing your clients well. Jennifer enjoys getting to know her clients well beyond just their financial aspirations, whether it’s their family, interests, career path, or the values that inform their daily decision-making. She encourages ongoing and open conversations about the investment strategies that she uses in her clients’ portfolios and provides regular, personalized portfolio updates, in simple language. She believes that the fees she charges should always be transparent, reflective of the value of her services, and discussed candidly at regular intervals.
3. Responsible stewardship – Jennifer follows a disciplined and value-based investment strategy focused on owning quality businesses with excellent management, strong cash flow, significant competitive advantages, and abundant room for long-term growth. She believes in the benefit of leveraging experts wherever possible, and draws on the expertise of Odlum Brown’s highly-regarded Research Department in designing personalized portfolios for her clients.
Jennifer is a current Director of Elevation Outdoors, a not-for-profit organization that teaches troubled and underprivileged youth important life skills through a variety of challenging outdoor pursuits. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Aberdeen Hall Preparatory School, where she chairs the Board’s Governance Committee.
